23andme.com/start Register Kit : Registering Your DNA Test Kit – 23andMe
Before you submit your sample, you will need to register your saliva collection tube to a 23andMe account at 23andme.com/start. In order to register your saliva collection tube, you will need to either create a new account or log into an existing 23andMe account.
If you need help registering a replacement or Chip Upgrade kit, please refer to the Replacement and Chip Upgrade Kits registration section below.
Account Setup
Anyone with a valid email address can create a 23andMe account at any time. Although you enter an email address when placing an order in the 23andMe store, placing an order does not automatically create an account. Most customers will create their 23andMe accounts as part of the registration process, after they receive their kits in the mail.
I have an existing account
If you already created a 23andMe account, you can register your kit to that existing account by visiting https://you.23andme.com/start/barcode/. You will be prompted to log in before entering your barcode and profile information.
I need to make a new account
If you do not have an account or wish to register your kit into a new account under a new email address, go to https://www.23andme.com/start. You will be prompted to enter your first and last name, birthdate, email address, and set a password in order to create an account. You will also be required to read and agree to our Terms of Service and Privacy Statement during this step.
Your account setup is not complete until you confirm your email address.
Alternatively, click “Sign up with Google” or “Sign up with Apple” to create your 23andMe account using a third party service (e.g., Google or Apple®). If you choose this option, you will not be required to complete the above information; the information listed in your third party account account – name, birthdate, email address, and password – will be linked to your 23andMe account. You will need to read and agree to our Terms of Service and Privacy Statement before the account is created, but will not need to confirm your email address before being able to register your kit.
Barcode Entry and Profile Selection
The 14-digit barcode is located on the side of the collection tube included in your kit. You can enter your barcode number either with or without the dashes.
If you mailed your sample before completing the registration process, you will be able to register your sample once it arrives at the lab.
In most instances, the individual registering should select “I will be using this kit.” You should only select the other option if you will be registering on behalf of someone else.
Terms of Service and Consents
When registering a kit, you will be prompted to review and agree to our Terms of Service and make your consent selections for Research and Sample Storage. You will have the option to review your selections at the end of the process before your registration is finalized.
Terms of Service and Privacy Statement
You are required to accept the Terms of Service and Privacy Statement in order to use the 23andMe Service.
Research Consent(s)
After accepting the Terms of Service and Privacy Statement, you will be presented with the option to accept or decline participation in 23andMe Research. You may change your research consent choice at any time from within your 23andMe account. In order to activate the consent selection buttons, you must select whether you are consenting for yourself or on behalf of another individual.
If you choose to participate in Research, you will see a second consent called Individual Data Sharing Consent. Like research consent, you can change your preference at any time.
If you choose to participate in Research, you will also see an opt in for Research Opportunities Based on Your Unreported Genetics. By opting in, you are allowing us to contact you about potential research opportunities based on DNA variants that have not been reported to you.
Sample Storage
You have the option to store your sample at the lab. If you choose to have your sample stored, you may later request that it be destroyed; however, if you choose not to store your sample this cannot be changed.
Review and Submission
Review all the information you have provided during registration, and confirm that the barcode and profile name listed on the review page are correct. You must click the Complete Registration button in order for your registration to be completed.
Once you have completed the registration process, you will see the following confirmation page and receive a confirmation email at your account email address. After registration, you can provide your sample and track the status of your kit from your profile homepage.
Replacement and Chip Upgrade Kits
All replacement and Chip Upgrade kits issued after June 23, 2020 are assigned to the original profile, but need to be registered in order for the lab to process the sample. The steps are similar to those above – however, you want to make sure that you first sign into the 23andMe account associated with your replacement or Chip Upgrade barcode before proceeding with registration.
To register your replacement or Chip Upgrade kit, visit https://you.23andme.com/start/barcode/, sign in to your account, and enter your 14-digit barcode. You will receive a confirmation email once registration is complete.
Please note that if your replacement or Chip Upgrade kit was issued before June 23, 2020, you do not need to register your kit, as the barcode will be automatically registered to your original profile.
