The Making of DIANA on CBS Sunday Morning, Adrienne Warren on Tina and More
This morning’s CBS Sunday Morning featured three separate Broadway segments, including Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, David Byrne (American Utopia), and Diana, all of which were featured on the show.
“Tina: The Tina Turner Musical,” which received 12 Tony Award nominations, will reopen on Broadway next month, with Tony nominee Adrienne Warren making her Broadway return. Reporter Maurice Dubois sits down with Warren to discuss how she channelled the flamboyant spirit of the late rock icon. There is also a discussion of how the pandemic forced Warren to rethink her career, which included her involvement with the Broadway Advocacy Coalition, an organisation dedicated to combating systemic racism in the theatre industry and receiving a Special Tony Award as a result of this.
Byrne then discusses the significance of collective rituals like concerts that were forbidden to us during the pandemic lockdown, and how their return is a part of our healing.
A final look at the history of Diana: The Musical by correspondent David Pogue during a pandemic is presented. In 2016, David Bryan, the composer, and Joe De Pietro, the script writer, began work on a new musical based on Princess Diana’s life. When Broadway closed in March 2020, that show was en route to New York. Finally, in the fall of this year, “Diana: The Musical” will make its Broadway debut, but not on Broadway per se, but rather on Netflix.
