How to change your Xbox gamertag : Ways to change your gamertag
If this is your first time changing your gamertag, you can change it one time for free. This is regardless of whether we created it for you automatically when you first signed up for Xbox (meaning you didn’t choose it yourself) or if you created your own gamertag at signup.
Note that Microsoft can at any time deem a gamertag harmful or inappropriate (even if the “Change gamertag” tool allows it to be created), and we can change that gamertag without warning. For more info on why we remove gamertag, see:
Change your Xbox gamertag online
- Go to the official website:
- Sign in with the Microsoft account email address and password associated with your gamertag. Confirm that you’re signed in to the right account by ensuring it says your current gamertag in the top-right corner of the page after signing in.
- Enter the new gamertag you want in the text box and select Check availability.
Gamertags can be up to 12 characters long, including spaces. They can’t start with a number. If you receive a “That name isn’t available. Try a different one” message, that means you’ll need to create another one.
- On the next page, review how the gamertag will look across Xbox services.
- If the selected gamertag is already being used, you’ll still be able to use a version of it with a suffix that includes the # symbol and a unique set of numbers. This is to allow you to use your desired gamertag while still having a unique identifier.

- If you’re satisfied with your new gamertag, select Claim it.
Change your Xbox gamertag on Xbox Series or Xbox One
After you confirm your new gamertag, the change is reflected across Xbox. You don’t need to tell your friends that you’ve changed it—their friends lists will be updated automatically.
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Select Profile & system, and then select your gamertag.
- Select My profile> Customise profile, and then select your gamertag.
- Under Choose your new gamertag, enter the new gamertag you want in the available text box and select Check availability.Gamertags can be up to 12 characters long, including spaces.
