James Webb Space Telescope: Celebrating the deepest photo of the universe ever taken!
A photograph is worth a million words. In honour of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, commonly known as the JWST or Webb, and the deepest infrared image of the universe it has ever captured, Google has created a new Doodle. We are talking about the biggest international space project ever as well as the world’s most powerful infrared telescope. Six months after its launch, NASA has revealed the first operational photographs taken by Webb, revealing previously unknown worlds and depths.
Second Administrator James E. Webb commanded the Apollo missions that took mankind to their first moon landing. The JWST is named in his honour. Launched on December 25, 2021, the telescope takes a month to reach its orbital altitude of 1.5 million kilometres (940,000 miles) above the Earth’s surface. NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency worked together to make this launch possible (CSA).

Astronomers will now be able to examine every stage of the universe’s history, which spans 13.5 billion years, and the mysteries beyond our galaxy thanks to photos from the JWST. NASA plans to use Webb to study the origins of the cosmos, the evolution of galaxies, the life cycle of stars, and other planets. Even 400 million years after the big bang, the JWST will be able to observe the light from galaxies that formed and discover oxygen and organic molecules on distant planets.
“How did we come here? Are we the only ones in the universe?,” are perennial questions that have plagued mankind for as long as anybody can remember. JWST’s infrared photos will be sharper than any images ever acquired by a space observatory, allowing us to investigate these topics and distant worlds orbiting other stars, as well as our own solar system. As a result, further scientific discoveries in the future will be possible, allowing us to see things like time and space in a whole new way.
In addition to the deepest infrared photo of the universe ever taken, the JWST’s first photographs are also featured in today’s Doodle. Find out more about them by reading the paragraphs that follow.

Thousands of galaxies – including the faintest objects ever observed in the infrared – have appeared in Webb’s view for the first time. This slice of the vast universe is approximately the size of a grain of sand held at arm’s length by someone on the ground.
- President Joe Biden unveiled image of galaxy cluster SMACS 0723, known as Webb’s First Deep Field, during White House event Monday, July 11
- Webb’s sharp near-infrared view brought out faint structures in extremely distant galaxies, offering most detailed view of early universe to date
- NASA, partners will release full series of Webb’s first full-color images and data, known as spectra, Tuesday, July 12, during live NASA TV broadcast
