The government has implemented a system whereby citizens’ phones will flash an alarm in the event of an emergency, such as a flood or landslip.
On Tuesday, less than a month after the identical “Emergency Alert Message” had flashed on people’s smartphones, the same message flashed again.
This is a SAMPLE TESTING MESSAGE delivered through Cell Broadcasting System by the Department of Telecommunication, Government of India,” it says in the Emergency Alert Message–Extreme. There is nothing you need to do in response to this message. TEST Pan-India Emergency Alert System, which is being implemented by the National Disaster Management Authority, has been notified. The communication indicated its purpose, which was to “improve public safety and provide timely alerts during emergencies,” and included the time and date it was sent.

On Friday afternoon (September 15), many people received the “Emergency Alert – Severe” notification on their mobile devices from the government and took to social media to spread the word.
In addition to today, consumers have been receiving this ’emergency alert: severe message’ every month since August.
To improve emergency communication during disasters and protect our valued citizens, the Department of Telecommunications and the National Disaster Management Authority announced in July that they would be conducting Cell Broadcast Alert System testing.
Each Indian telecommunications company is currently being put through rigorous testing of its Cell Broadcast Alert System as part of the government’s ongoing dedication to ensuring the public’s safety. The Ministry of Communications announced that periodic tests would be conducted in different parts of the country to evaluate the performance of the existing systems, including those belonging to the various Mobile Operators and Cell Broadcast System.
The Cell Broadcast Alert System is cutting-edge technology that allows us to notify all mobile devices within a certain area—whether they belong to locals or tourists—of essential and time-sensitive messages for disaster management. This makes sure that crucial emergency information gets to as many individuals as quickly as possible. Government and emergency services utilise it to warn the public about danger and keep them updated during emergencies. Public safety announcements, evacuation notices, and other time-sensitive alerts are just some of the usual uses for Cell Broadcast in the event of an emergency.
During the trial period, participants’ mobile devices may receive test versions of real emergency notifications. We promise that these notifications are merely a routine element of our testing procedure and not a sign of imminent danger. In addition, it stated that any test notifications sent would be properly marked as “SAMPLE TESTING MESSAGE” to prevent any misunderstandings.
