To apply online or for renewal, click on the “Start New Application” button at dmahs-nj.my.site.com/familycare. When you apply online, use a laptop or desktop computer. Answer the questions by clicking on the circle next to either “Yes” or “No.”
NJ FamilyCare is federal and state funded health insurance program created to help qualified New Jersey residents of any age access to affordable health insurance. NJ FamilyCare is for people who do not have employer insurance.
If you are interested in enrolling in NJ FamilyCare please look at the Who Is Eligible? section to see if you qualify.
The entire application process can be completed online.
How to Create an Online NJ FamilyCare account
• To apply online, click on the “Start New Application” button at dmahs-nj.my.site.com/familycare.
• When you apply online, use a laptop or desktop computer.
• Answer the questions by clicking on the circle next to either “Yes” or “No.”
• Click on the “Continue” button.
• Read everything on the page and click on the “Continue to NJ FamilyCare application” button.
• Read through the “Privacy Policy”.
• Click on the “Agree” button to continue
• You must agree to the Privacy Policy if you want to apply online
• Read through the “Estate Recovery Acknowledgement”
• Click on the “Agree” button to continue
• You must agree to the Estate Recovery Acknowledgement if you want to apply online.
• Read through the “Electronic Notices” page.
• You can create an online NJ FamilyCare account if you click on either the “Agree” or “Disagree” buttons.
• Electronic Notices are not required in order to create an online NJ FamilyCare account.
• Type in your email address, first name and last name in the boxes.
• Click on the “Send Confirmation Email” button.
• You should see a message telling you to check your email.
• The NJ FamilyCare email may be sent to your Junk or Spam folder. Please check those too!
• The email should come mahs.donotreply@dhs.state.nj.us or mahs.donotreply@dhs.nj.gov DO NOT CLICK LINKS FROM A DIFFERENT EMAIL ADDRESS.
• Click on the website link.
• Create a password.
• Click on the “I’m not a robot” check box. This reCPATCHA is a task that makes sure a person is completing an application.
• Click on the “Complete Registration” button.
• After completing registration, you can begin filling out your online NJ FamilyCare application!
Who is Eligible?
NJ FamilyCare includes New Jersey residents; all are eligible to apply. Financial eligibility will be determined by the latest federal tax return which, when filed, will be electronically verified.
Children under 19 are eligible with higher incomes up to 355% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) ($8,875/month for a family of four). Parents still need to renew the coverage each year. Children can qualify regardless of their immigration status.
Adults age 19-64 with income up to 138% FPL ($1,677/month for a single person and $2,268/month for a couple). In general, immigrant adults must have Legal Permanent Resident status in the US for at least five years in order to qualify for NJ FamilyCare. Some immigrant adults can qualify if they are lawfully present, regardless of when they entered the US. Examples are refugees and asylees, and there are others. Immigrants age 19 and 20 who are lawfully present and have very low income ($509/month for a single person and $805/month for a family of 2) can also qualify.
Pregnant people with income up to 205% FPL ($5,125/month for a family of four). Pregnant people who are lawfully present can qualify regardless of the date that they entered the US.

When you apply online you can create an account which will allow you to:
- Save partially completed applications
- View submitted applications, and
- Receive future Medicaid notifications electronically.
