On January 1, 2019, the announcement was made that AEW would be formed. On May 25, the promotion held its first event, Double or Nothing, which was also its first pay-per-view (PPV). In addition to Double or Nothing, AEW’s President and Chief Executive Officer Tony Khan has called the promotion’s four largest shows of the year—All Out, Full Gear, Revolution, and Double or Nothing—the “big four” pay-per-view events (PPVs). The COVID-19 epidemic forced the AEW to relocate most of its activities to Jacksonville, Florida’s Daily’s Place from March 2020 to July 2021.
After reopening to a small number of fans in August 2020, AEW held sold-out gigs in May 2021, and by mid-July of that year, they were back on the road for live promotions. Forbidden Door, a co-promoted event with New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), was the fifth pay-per-view (PPV) event that AEW added to its lineup in June 2022. In the second half of 2023, the promotion added All In, WrestleDream, and Worlds End to its schedule, respectively, in August, October, and December.
