Arvind Kejriwal launches a free food programme for homeless individuals in shelters.
Delhi’s new homeless shelter programme was launched on Sunday by the city’s new Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal.
A shelter home complex at Sarai Kale Khan partnered with the Akshaya Patra Foundation to implement a programme to distribute free food.
The program’s main goal is to ensure that free cooked meals are provided to the homeless in all of the shelter homes across Delhi managed by the Delhi government and the Akshaya Patra Foundation.
Mr Kejriwal spoke to the crowd, telling them that the Delhi government runs 209 night shelters throughout the city, as well as 6,000 free meals. As the number of homeless people increases during the winter months, this number will rise to 12,000.
Shelters homes are home to the most impoverished of the population. People like them don’t vote for any particular party, so no government did anything for them. This is the first government programme of any note to focus on the disadvantaged.
We have put in a lot of effort for the people in need, and the AAP government is a responsible government. Kejriwal is happy to be starting this initiative (free food distribution), and stated, “I am glad to begin this programme.”
He mentioned that in the past, many governments received criticism from the High Court due to poor housing conditions, but the AAP government worked hard to improve this.
