Celebrity MasterChef judges were impressed by a contestant who used a technique they had never seen before.
In the season premiere of Celebrity MasterChef on Sunday night, comedian Dilruk Jayasinha joked his way through the kitchen, but in the end he won the judges’ tastebuds over with a surprise dish.
In addition to Jayasinha, the show’s new contestants included swimming sensation Ian Thorpe, Gold Logie winner Rebecca Gibney, singer Dami Im, television presenter Chrissie Swan, professional footballer Archie Thompson, AFL champion Nick Riewoldt, actor Matthew Le Neves, fashion designer Collette Dinnigan, and Gordon Ramsay’s daughter Tilly.
They brought back the same panel of judges from season one: Jock Zonfrillo, Melissa Leong, and Andy Allen to find out which celebrity has the best cooking skills outside of their day jobs.

Dami, Collette, Dilruk, and Crissy each prepared four dishes for them, and they chose their favourites from those four. Ultimately, it was Jayasinha who walked away with the season-long immunity pin.
He’d dazzled everyone with his innovative use of flavour.
He explained that the challenge was to prepare a dish for which he was well-known. “Since the pandemic began last year, all I’ve been able to think about is a traditional Sri Lankan dish called kiribath, which is coconut milk rice.
The judges were taken aback not only by the unusual combination, but also by his erratic performance style.
The astounded judges once inquired, “Dilruk, did you just measure salt?” at one point.
“Don’t be such a jerk,” he snapped back. It’s true; I’ve just done it now.
