The U.S. Department of Labor recently noted that during the week of February 15, 2021, 730,000 unemployment claims were filed nationally, well in excess of pre-pandemic levels, when claims average just over 200,000 per week were filed. Many state unemployment agencies have been overwhelmed since the COVID-19 pandemic started, receiving more claims within months than is normally the case over the course of the year.

This was an attractive scheme for cyber criminals and scammers due to their sheer volume of claims and additional federal funding available as well as states lifting certain requirements for benefits due to COVID-19.
