SELFIE is a free, online self-reflection tool for schools developed by the European Commission, with a panel of European education experts, to help support schools in their use of digital technologies for teaching and learning.
In order to use SELFIE, you must first create an account for your school through the link you can find at https://ec.europa.eu/education/schools-go-digital.
It uses questionnaires to collect the views of school leaders, teachers and students, on an anonymous and voluntary basis, and compiles the results in an interactive report that can identify strengths and weaknesses.
SELFIE can be taken every year to enable a school to monitor its progress over time and can be taken up to three times during any one academic year. For the purposes of SELFIE, there are three questionnaires, one for each of the three user groups: school leaders, teachers and students.
SELFIE does not measure or compare the knowledge or skills of any user nor does it assess or benchmark schools in any way. Most questions are answered using a 5-point scale with 1 the lowest rating and 5 the highest.
There are several different scales used in SELFIE depending on the wording of the question. There are also a small number of questions that users are asked to reply to in their own words.
How SELFIE works
This topic explains how to navigate your school’s self-reflection journey.
Choose your school coordinator
If you would like to use SELFIE in your school, the first step is to assign a person or small team to coordinate the exercise.
Register your school
Once you’ve chosen who will coordinate the exercise, you can
- Register the school on the SELFIE platform, providing basic information such as type of school (for example primary or secondary), size and location
- choose the timing of the SELFIE exercise
- select who will take part (for example, which group of students)

Tailor your questions
SELFIE lets you select or add questions that match the needs and context of your school.
See what you might want to add on top of the standard statements and questions.
Start asking!
Invite students, teachers and school leaders to take part in SELFIE on an anonymous basis.
It takes around 30 minutes to complete the questions. Teachers and school leaders can do this at a time that suits them, while we recommend that students answer as part of a lesson.
Get the results
Once participants have completed the questions, SELFIE generates a report for your school.
This shows the aggregated results in a visual and interactive way. These results are fully anonymised – the report belongs to the school and only the school can access it.
Discuss and act
You can use the findings from SELFIE to see how technologies could support teaching, learning and student assessment in your school.
Formulate an action plan and set your priorities.
Fine-tune your progress
You can repeat the assessment periodically.
This will help you gauge progress and see where other changes might be needed.
How to register?
In order to use SELFIE, you must first create an account for your school through the link you can find at https://ec.europa.eu/education/schools-go-digital.
You should use an e-mail account which you have access to (eg the official e-mail address of the school) rather than a personal one. If the school coordinator changes it means your school can keep the same address for SELFIE.
A teacher, school leader or another staff member must register your school.
Individual students or teachers should not sign up as they cannot use SELFIE in an individual capacity.
How do teachers and students take part?
Once your school coordinator has set up the SELFIE for your school, links are then sent to teachers, students and school leaders with the questions and statements to answer.
SELFIE takes between 20-40 minutes to complete.
HOW DO I LOG IN?
Once registered, you will be able to log into SELFIE by going to https://ec.europa.eu/education/schools-godigital or https://schools-go-digital.jrc.ec.europa.eu and using the school’s email address and the newly created password.
This will take you to the School Profile page on which you will be asked to provide some information about your school, most of which is optional, such as an additional email address. Please check your school profile at least once per year and make updates if needed (right side of the main SELFIE menu).
