Novak Djokovic • Australian Open • Tennis • Australia: Australia cancels Novak Djokovic’s Visa
When Novak Djokovic arrived in Melbourne, he had his visa to enter Australia dramatically cut off when he tried to get in.
He was held for hours at the city’s airport before border guards said he couldn’t come in and had to leave.
It came a day after he was given permission to play in the Australian Open without having to get a vaccination.
The Australian Prime Minister said that no one was above the law, and Djokovic is said to be arguing against the decision, which he thinks is unfair.
Shortly after he arrived in Melbourne, authorities found out that his team had not asked for a visa that allows medical exemptions for not being vaccinated. Djokovic has not talked about whether or not he has been vaccinated. Last year, he said he was “against vaccination.”
If the player stays in Australia while his lawyers try to change the decision, it isn’t clear whether he will be able to stay there.

“Australians have had to do a lot of hard work,” Greg Hunt said on the Channel 7 News Sunrise show. “Australians in many different states and territories have to show their vaccination records. It’s not unreasonable to have the same requirements for all who enter this country.”
In a tweet, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said: “We have to follow the rules when it comes to our borders, which is why they are important. No one can break these rules.”
