Memories

What is a “memory” in Family Tree? It’s a photograph, story, document, or audio recording that tells about your ancestor. Memories can make our ancestors more real to us and help us feel connected to them.

The Memories section of Family Tree provides a place where you can upload and manage memories. You can attach these memories to people in Family Tree so that everyone can enjoy them. You can also see memories added to your ancestors and cousins by other people.

Memories can be viewed and managed from two places—the Gallery page and the People page:

  • The Gallery page is organized by memory type.
  • The People page is organized by individuals associated with the memory.

This additional help explains how to get the most out of Memories in Family Tree. Here’s an overview of topics:

  • Adding Memories to the Gallery
  • Manage Memories using the Gallery Page
  • Manage Memories using the People Page
  • Find Memories

To read more about any of these topics, click the appropriate link in the left navigation bar.

Add a Memory by Uploading a File

On the Gallery page, you can add a memory by uploading a file in any of the following formats:

  • Documents in PDF format.
  • Audio files in MP3 and M4A format.
  • Stories (stories are typed directly into Memories).

Currently video files cannot be uploaded.

  2. If this is your first time uploading a memory, read the agreement and click the check box next to I have read and agree to the FamilySearch Content Submission Agreement and Upload Guidelines.
  3. Drag the file from your file list and drop it on the Gallery screen. Or, if you prefer, click Choose Files, locate the file, and click Open. After the file uploads, it will be listed first in the memory area.
