Once your pet is microchipped, you can register or enroll via the website or by calling 1-888-HomeAgain (1-888-466-3242). If your pet is not microchipped, you can ask your vet to implant a HomeAgain microchip, then you can register its unique ID code along with your contact details.
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recommends pets be microchipped with an ISO microchip (134kHz) before you travel. Speak to your veterinarian for information and guidance on microchipping, vaccinations, travel certificates, etc., but as each country’s rules and regulations vary, it’s also advisable to contact the specific country you’re visiting. This is especially important if you are relocating, since importation, quarantine periods, and vaccination requirements can be very different between countries.

Why is microchipping the preferred method of identifying pets?
A microchip is the only form of pet identification that is permanent, with a unique number that cannot be altered or removed. Although we recommend that all pets should wear collar tags carrying their name and owner’s phone number, these can become worn, lost, or be slipped off with the collar. Even pet tattoos can blur over time or be altered. A microchip lasts a lifetime and can never be lost, or changed.
How big is a microchip?
A microchip is tiny — just 12 mm, which is about the size of a grain of rice. Once implanted, it can’t be seen, and your pet can’t feel it.
How are pets microchipped?
Microchipping is carried out by your veterinarian in a quick and simple procedure similar to administering an injection. The microchip comes preloaded in a sterile applicator and is injected under the loose skin between your pet’s shoulder blades. The whole process takes only a few seconds and no anesthetic is required.
Will the chip wear out and need to be replaced?
Never. Since the chip has no internal battery, power source or moving parts, there is nothing to wear out or replace. It literally lasts a lifetime. Most of the time, the chip is totally inactive, but when a microchip reader is passed over it, it gets enough power from the scanner to transmit the pet’s ID number. This can then be recorded and your pet identified.
