A supposed “invitation” from PayPal related to USDT is a major red flag for a scam. It’s a common phishing tactic designed to trick you.

If you received a message or notification saying something like: “You have an invite from PayPal USDT” …it’s very likely a scam, phishing attempt, or crypto-related fraud.

PayPal and USDT are Not the Same

  • PayPal USD (PYUSD):

    • PayPal has its own stablecoin called PayPal USD (PYUSD), which is designed to be stable and pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar. It is the only stablecoin officially supported within the PayPal ecosystem.

  • Tether (USDT):

    • Tether is a completely different, unaffiliated stablecoin. While some crypto exchanges and platforms allow you to use PayPal as a payment method to buy USDT, PayPal itself does not send “invitations” for you to use or receive USDT.

  1. PayPal doesn’t “invite” people to receive USDT (Tether)

    • USDT is a cryptocurrency, and while PayPal now supports crypto in some regions, it does not send random invites for USDT transfers or offers.

    • Scammers may try to lure you into clicking a malicious link by pretending you’ve received money or a crypto bonus.

  3. Crypto + PayPal combo is a big red flag

    • Most scammers spoof trusted brands (like PayPal) with a crypto twist to steal login info or get you to authorize fake transactions.

  4. Poor wording or strange formatting

    • “You have an invite from PayPal USDT” is not how PayPal communicates legitimate transactions.

✅ What to Do

Step Action
1. Don’t click anything Avoid clicking links or buttons in the message.
2. Screenshot & delete Take a screenshot if needed, then delete the message or email.
3. Report it:

  • To PayPal:

  • To FTC: reportfraud.ftc.gov
    | 4. Change your password | If you clicked anything or entered info, immediately change your PayPal password and enable 2FA. |

  • You can always check your real PayPal account by logging in directly at paypal.com—never through a message link.

  • If someone sends you real USDT or crypto, it will show up in your crypto wallet, not through a generic invite.
